Evolution of the Self as a Horseperson
Over the past couple of years, my world and the possibilities within it have been blown wide open. I’ve been able to learn and implement so much that is in the truest sense pro horse in every interaction, with results that speak for themselves.
I’ve attempted to summarize what I do briefly, crediting the main sources of influence to me. This is very important because there is so much gas lighting going on in equestrian circles that the same words mean quite different things to different people. (If I had a dollar for everyone who claims that a “happy horse is the most important thing” and then rides BTV 99% of the time or treats a stressed or non-compliant horse as “behaving badly,” I’d be rich). I do not claim to know or do everything exactly like those experts, but to the best of my knowledge, they are at the top of what good horsemanship means at this high-stakes time. (This does expressly NOT mean that by association, I endorse everyone that they may promote through their ventures.) And of course I am also continuing to evolve and learn more daily.
Foundational training, classical dressage, CranioSacral bodywork and nervous system understanding go hand in hand in allowing our horses to develop in sustainable ways, overcome fears without shutting down, and move in healthy, parasympathetic patterns and correct alignment.
Relationship-Centric, Consent-Based Foundational (Re-)Training for a horse who loves being with his/her humans because s/he feels safe, understands, and is willing & able to do what is being asked, and learns how to self-regulate their nervous system in a world built by and for predators. (This work is largely informed by Warwick Schiller’s Attuned Horsemanship.)
Classical Dressage Training for a horse who is supple, well-aligned, balanced, moving joyfully, well-muscled, and who carries the rider in a way that does not compromise their body, for the best possible shot at long-term soundness (This work is largely informed by Anja Beran.)
Certified Equine CranioSacral Practitioner for our horses’ optimal physical and emotional health, using gentle touch and the body’s own wisdom and capacity to heal. (This work is largely informed by Tom Mayes Integrated Equine Therapies.)
Nervous System Understanding / Trauma-informed Training and Holistic Biomechanics for horses and people with compromised patterns to learn to interrupt and change them. Holistic Biomechanics allows riders to align and follow their horse’s motion from the inside out, working with their facia trains rather than putting one shoulder here and one leg there… (This work is largely informed by Jane Pike’s Joyride program.)
Please note: No amount of training can make up for a horse in distress because his basic needs of forage, friends, and freedom aren’t met, or for a horse who is in pain.
